Planning to travel to NYC? We’ve got a few essential tips about airport transfers in NYC

Lots of people who travel to New York City for the first time make this common mistake as soon as they exit the airport – overpay for the ride to Manhattan. Yes, New York is overwhelming and you might temporarily loose a bit of common sense the moment you arrive there, but don’t worry – it is very common and absolutely natural. Unfortunately, there are people who know that and will try to make the most of it by ripping you off.

We would like to give you a few valuable (quite literally) tips which will make your journey and first experience in Big Apple much more enjoyable.

Arriving at JFK International Airport:

  • Yellow NYC taxi: $52.50 flat fare (non-metered) + bridge and tunnel tolls + gratuity ($2-$5 is sufficient). Always make sure that the driver will not meter you and get him to verify that you will be charged a flat fare before you get in.
  • Uber: the average fare will be around $67-$87 + tolls + gratuity.
  • Metro: firstly you will need to take AirTrain JFK service which is $5. It will take you to the connection with Metro and Long Island Rail Road. You will then have to purchase a one ride subway ticket for $2.75 which will take you to Manhattan. Alternatively you can use Long Island Rail Road, $4.75–$9.50 (children under 5 are free) as the journey to Manhattan is 2-3 times quicker compared to Metro.
  • City bus: single bus journey costs $2.75, but you need to make 3 changes in order to get to Manhattan. We wouldn’t recommend taking a bus if you’re in NYC for the first time, however if you wish to do so, log on to tripplanner.mta.info for more information and specific stops.
  • Shuttle bus: The average fair is $17.00 for one way transfer. To find out more and buy a ticket visit SuperShuttleNYC Airporter or Go Airlink NYC.

Arriving at LaGuardia Airport (LGA):

  • Yellow NYC taxi: average $29–$37 metered fare + bridge and tunnel tolls + gratuity ($2-$5 is sufficient).
  • Uber: the average fare will be around $34-$44 + tolls + gratuity.
  • City bus: single bus journey costs $2.75, but you need to make 2 changes in order to get to Manhattan. We wouldn’t recommend taking a bus if you’re in NYC for the first time, however if you wish to do so, log on to tripplanner.mta.info for more information and specific stops.
  • Shuttle bus: The average fair is $14.00 for one way transfer. To find out more and buy a ticket visit SuperShuttleNYC Airporter or Go Airlink NYC.

Arriving at Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR):

  • Yellow NYC taxi: average $50-$75 metered fare + bridge and tunnel tolls + gratuity ($4-$7 is sufficient).
  • Uber: the average fare will be around $55-$75 + tolls + gratuity.
  • AirTrain Newark: AirTrain connects the airport to NJ Transit and Amtrak (American rail road service); average fare on NJ Transit to Manhattan is $13, Amtrak trains – $35 (make sure you keep your AirTrain ticket as it is also used for the NJ Transit fare).
  • Shuttle bus: The average fair is $21.00 for one way transfer. To find out more and buy a ticket visit SuperShuttle NYC Airporter or Go Airlink NYC.

One last tip that applies to every airport: if you are taking a taxi always try to pay cash and NEVER trust any card readers that drivers may ask you to use for a payment.

Good luck and enjoy the your stay in the Big Apple!
